Like many of us, I suffer from an affliction that gives me an irrational dislike of boring yet practical vehicles. I do, in fact, flock to beaters. Only requirements (that I will totally disregard on a whim) for this purchase are:

it must get me the 8 miles from point A to point B in the Michigan winter

must not have a goddamn 4L60E

could possibly tow the bike

all under $3000.

But all these are apparently no good :( why can’t I just accept a boring-ass V6 manual work truck and be done with it?

Because you could have a Saab wagon.

Wouldn’t that Suburban have a 700R4, which is basically a 4L60 without the electronics that were not the problem?

That Ranger is pretty groovy. My first car was a little old Ranger, but nowhere near as cool as that one.

That thing rules. Too bad it’s not a ‘96 though, I think that was the first year of the Mark VI with a roller cam.

I would suggest Buick Roadmaster Wagon with the towing package but that has a 4L60, so Ford LTD County Squire if you can find one.

It’s listed as manual, so even better.

Also this seems way too good to be true, but I’d be more than happy to switch back to Ferd: http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/577515…

Listed as a manual trans, so NV4500 with a 12" clutch if it’s not a typo.

the 87 suburban probably has a 700R4 the non electronic version of the 4l60e. My dad’s 87 v10 (no it’s just a v8) silverado had the transmission built 3 times throughout its 275,000 miles its done. Yes I still have but its in primer.

What about jeep ZJs?

Came to say this. As weak a link as the 4L60e is, it was upgraded a couple times over the years, fixing some of the biggest issues. The electronics aren’t the issue, so the older you go the worse it gets.

A few years back I drove a 2WD F-350 Dually through Michigan at night in a blizzard. There was no speed or throttle position at which the rear wouldn’t randomly break traction on unseen ice. Never have I felt more awake.
